In Loco Parentis - New dance theatre piece seeks to tackle stigmas surrounding growing up in care

Vincent Dance Theatre have generously organised discounted ticket offers to the #CareExpConf community. Details and code at the bottom of the article.

Critically acclaimed Vincent Dance Theatre is inviting the care-experienced community to come and see its new work In Loco Parentis – currently touring nationally.

The result of in-depth research with care-experienced young people and the adults in their lives In Loco Parentis explores what it’s like growing up in care and our universal need to feel safe, looked after and to belong. Combining movement, strong visual imagery and spoken word the piece reflects the cycles of rupture and repair that drive children into care – and the impact this can have on their lives. Vincent Dance Theatre is particularly keen that the care-experienced community gets involved in the debate around the work so are offering discounted tickets to all of its tour dates.

A post-show discussion event at The Place, London will see Jenny Molloy, author of Hackney Child, and Dr Jenny Driscoll from Kings College London discussing the real life implications of the issues explored in the piece.

Charlotte Vincent, the show’s creator and Artistic Director of Vincent Dance Theatre, says:

In Loco Parentis explores what happens to children when their parents aren’t able to look after them. These are young people impacted by trauma in childhood so the work also aims to meet what that looks like head on.
“I want to raise public understanding about what kids go through, remove stigma around the challenging behaviours that emerge from that and encourage greater empathy towards the most vulnerable people in our society whose ‘life chances’ are often written off at an early age because of the difficult start they have had in life.”
